Former Another Level star Dane Bowers has been found guilty of assaulting his former Miss Wales ex-girlfriend - and has been warned he could face time in jail

Former pop star Dane Bowers could face jail after being found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

The star – who first found fame with 90s boy band Another Level – claimed that he had acted in self-defence when his former love, beauty queen Sophia Cahill, was struck in the face during an incident in January this year.

He also claimed that any injuries she had sustained were down to a recent nose job she had undergone.

But district Judge Andrew Sweet rejected Dane’s explanation, saying: ‘I am satisfied that he assaulted her in the manner she [Sophia] described.’

Dane could now face jail time, and his fate will be decided when the case returns for sentencing on 15 October.

The singer – who once collaborated with Victoria Beckham on the track Out Of Your Mind – was living with former Miss Wales Sophia at his parents’ home when the incident took place, despite the fact that they had split up two months earlier.

The scuffle occurred after Sophia tried to wake Dane up the morning after a night out, and he became annoyed that he had glitter on his face.

The brunette beauty told an earlier hearing that Dane then grabbed her by the shoulders, threw her out of a bedroom, hit her in the face, giving her a bloody nose, pulled her hair and squeezed her throat.

When asked by his lawyer about the injuries Sophia claims to have suffered – including being covered in blood, bruising on her arms and red marks around her neck – Dane said he could not understand how it could have happened

‘The only [injuries] I can explain are the ones on her arms,’ he told the court. ‘She fell on the wash basket, so she might have had some injuries from that but it wasn’t that drastic.’

In closing, the judge ordered a report to be prepared on Dane, telling him: ‘Bearing in mind the nature of this assault, it’s an all options report, I’m not ruling out the possibility of a prison sentence.’
