The Strictly Come Dancing star opens up about rumours surrounding her relationship with Lee Mead
Denise Van Outen has endured speculation about her marriage to Lee Mead over the last few months, as she focused on taking part in the Strictly Come Dancing tour while Lee, 31, relocated to LA to pursue his dream of becoming a Hollywood actor.
The Essex pair married in 2009 in a private ceremony in the Seychelles and in 2010 they welcomed Betsy into the world.
While most stars would be quick to say that everything’s fine, Denise is prepared to admit that being apart for six months has caused a ‘massive strain’ on her marriage.
‘He’s in LA for pilot season. It’s the thing actors do and you have to be there,’ she says.
‘To be honest, it is really difficult. We just haven’t seen each other. I started on Strictly in September and we’ve been like ships passing in the night.
‘I’m not going to lie, it is a massive strain on the relationship.’
Denise says the pair Skype when they can, but the time difference makes it difficult.
‘We haven’t really spent any proper time together for six months. We’ve just been trying to juggle everything because we don’t have a nanny,’ Denise admits.
But despite making their best efforts, Denise says she wouldn’t want to live in LA if Lee gets a permanent TV role.
‘I personally couldn’t live in LA. I love going out there for holidays, but I think LA does funny things to people.
‘Most people I know who’ve lived there become really affected by it – you can easily lose part of yourself.
‘I was offered the chance to host a new Ryan Seacrest dating show, but I’d just met Lee.
‘I didn’t want to chase my career forever and never become a mum.’
She says she understands why the time they’ve spent apart has led to speculation in the media that their marriage is in trouble. ‘We’ve never done the whole red carpet thing as a couple.
‘I mean, I’d say this has been the hardest few months out of all of our time together, so I can understand why people speculate. But he’s back soon.’
