Glee actor Cory's parents divorced when he was seven
Cory Monteith died alone in a hotel room after overdosing on heroin and booze at the age of 31.
Before the Glee star’s death on 17 July, he’d been open about his drugs battle, revealing in 2011 how his parents’ divorce when he was seven led him down a dark path.
He’d attended 12 different schools by the age of 16, smoked pot and admitted to using ‘anything and everything as much as possible’.
Aged 19, he went to rehab for the first time.
However, he started to turn his life around when he got into acting.
Although he returned to rehab for a month-long stint in March for substance abuse, to those outside his close-knit circle, it seemed to be a blip.
In fact, he was the picture of happiness at LA’s Chrysalis Butterfly Ball on 8 June, beaming next to girlfriend Lea Michele, 26, in what was their last public appearance together.
Even two days before his death – when he was in Vancouver and Lea was away with her girlfriends in Mexico – he was said to be ‘in great spirits’.
Sources claim Cory struggled to resist drugs whenever he was back in Vancouver, leading to allegations he led a double life: a clean and sober existence in LA and another in his native Canada.
The Fairmont Pacific Rim, where Cory died, is just 10 blocks away from Vancouver’s Main and Hastings, an area locals describe as ‘the epicentre of the city’s drugs trade’.
Reportedly ‘terrifying – even during the daytime’, it’s a den of temptation for anyone fighting addiction.
Resident Ashley Hiebert says she saw Cory in Vancouver’s Gastown, which neighbours the notorious area, at 9am the day before he died.
‘He was wearing a black hoodie and looked tired and like he had somewhere to be,’ she explains.
‘It was an odd part of town for him to be exploring in the morning because nothing’s open.’
