TV chef James Martin has quit the show after 10 years - but could he be about to join the new Top Gear line-up?

James Martin is as big a fixture of our Saturday mornings as a bacon sarnie and a bit of a fuzzy head – but that’s all set to change.

Having fronted BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen for the last 10 years, the TV chef has seen us through many a weekend morning over the years – but now he’s announced that he is quitting the show next month.

James, 43, confirmed the news in a statement, saying: ‘I would like to personally thank all the viewers for turning Saturday Kitchen into a three million-plus smash hit.

‘I could not have done it without them. I would also like to thank the BBC and Saturday Kitchen for the great opportunity they gave me.

‘It has been an amazing journey and I have been privileged to work with some of the world’s greatest chefs and some of the greatest names in showbiz. I wish the new chefs every success.

I am looking forward to getting stuck into my new projects and to lots of lie-ins on a Saturday morning.’

Well, that’s all very well, James – but what are we going to do without you!?

Still, the Yorkshire lad may not be gone from our screens for long, with rumours swirling that he may be about to join Chris Evans on the newly-rebooted Top Gear.

A source tells Now: ‘James has made it very clear that he would like to be part of the show. Everyone knows what a huge fan of cars he is.’

Indeed, the star is a serial car collector, with around 20 vehicles to his name including Ferrari Daytonas, three F1 cars – a Benetton, a Jordan and a Marussia – and a Shelby Mustang.

The petrol head has also competed in several car races, including Italy’s Mille Miglia in 2008, the Brands Hatch Mini Festival (where he was named the 2013 Champion of Mini Festival), and the Aston Martin Centenary Festival in July 2013.

What’s more, he’s also best mates with none other than Chris Evans, with the pair bonding over their shared love of classic cars.

So, whilst we’ll miss James’ soothing northern tones, his strapping silhouette and his way with a whisk on Saturday mornings, we’re hoping to see him back on another of our favourite shows very soon.
