The Sun's topless Page 3 girls tradition has ended, but look at the stars it created
It’s an end of an era, as The Sun has dropped its iconic Page 3 topless models after 45 years.
After years of protests from feminists, a petition calling for it to be scrapped has attracted more than 200,000 signatures.
But for the likes of Samantha Fox and Katie Price, who were regular faces in the 80s and 90s, it has launched their careers and earned them millions of pounds.
Here we take a look at five of the most memorable Page 3 stars:
Arguably the original babe who really put Page 3 on the map, Sam became a household name in the 80s.
Sam, 48, from north London, shot to fame in 1983 at age 16 after her mother sent pictures of her wearing lingerie to The Sunday People’s Face and Shape competition.
After winning The Sun’s Page Three Girl of the Year award for three consecutive years between 1984 and 1986, she retired from topless modelling at the tender age of 20 and launched a music career.
Her track Touch Me (I Want Your Body) released in 1986 reached number one in 17 countries.
Sam later went on to write songs for All Saints‘ 2000 album Saints & Sinners.
Katie Price. a.k.a Jordan
Katie Price launched her career in 1996 as a 16-year-old Page 3 girl under the pseudonym Jordan.
Said to be the most savvy business women of the bunch, she capitalised on her brand launching fragrances, a lingerie line, successful autobiographies, novels and equestrian range, all helping to make her estimated net worth in April 2012 £45m.
Now 36, she has reverted to her real name and she is famous for her many breast enlargement and reduction operations, her multiple marriages, becoming a mother-of-five and building a huge and lucrative brand around her name.
Katie is now a bookie’s favourite to win Celebrity Big Brother.
This glamour girl’s really done good.
Everyone’s favourite girl-next-door Melinda, 43, shot to fame after being discovered by Sam Fox‘s old agent who guided her onto Page 3.
Melinda from Swindon had her breasts surgically enhanced to a 34DD cup, and she was a favourite with the fans until readers voted to ban models with silicone implants.
She turned to TV presenting in the late 90s, appearing on Eurotrash and fronting her own show Melinda’s Big Night In on Channel 5. She also starred in Celebrity Big Brother 2.
Jodie, 36, was most famous for her rivalry with Jordan.
As her star rose the pair would have regular slanging matches, and memorably Jordan said she had ‘a nose like a builder’s elbow’.
Jodie certainly cashed in from appearing on the Page 3 six times. She landed countless modelling gigs, several stints on reality TV shows including her transformation into a female bodybuilder, and a place on Celebrity Big Brother 4.
Her 2005 autobiography Keeping It Real was in the top 10 on the best-sellers list.
The ultimate MILF – Linda was one of the all time favourite faces of Page 3.
It was perhaps then a no-brainer when she went on to be voted the Best Page 3 Girl Of All Time in 2005.
Born in north London, Linda, 55, began her modelling career in 1976 at the age of 18.
Since leaving topless modelling, Linda,
a mother-of-two, has forged a successful acting career with parts in
The Bill, Hollyoaks and Brookside before becoming a regular on
She’s also starred in ITV’s Dancing On Ice and on Celebrity Masterchef.
