Gaz doesn't want to return to his post-Take That days...

Anyone who’s reached their #goalweight will tell you that they constantly worry about piling the pounds back on – and it turns out that Gary Barlow is no different.

The Take That hunk regularly causes swooning up and down the country, whether it’s on TV talent shows like The X Factor and Let It Shine or performing on stage with his TT bandmates.

But Gaz has revealed that he is still haunted by his, ahem, cuddly phase in the years following Take That’s split, calling putting on weight again his ‘greatest fear’.

Speaking to BBC Good Food magazine, the star said: ‘My greatest fear is going back to 2002, when I didn’t have a record deal and I was very fat.

‘I don’t want to use the F word but I am going to have to, because I was.’

Gary has been open in the past about how he struggled with both his weight and mental health in the post-Take That days, admitting he went into a long, deep depression following the band’s split in 1996.

In 2011 he told The Observer: ‘I was living in Cheshire at the time, going to London and back on the train. I used to heavily disguise myself, with a hat and everything.  I was overweight, I wasn’t feeling great.  I was embarrassed to be me, to have people recognise me.’

And earlier this year he told Radio Times: ‘I wasn’t happy for a long period and when you know what that feels like, then I don’t care who you are, you’re going to wake up some mornings and you’re going to feel s***. You just are.’

But the band’s return in 2006 along with his gig as a judge on The X Factor from 2011 to 2013 gave Gaz a new lease of life, and saw him kickstart a health and fitness regime.

In 2013 he told The Mirror how he did it, confessing: ‘I’ve made big changes. I take exercise more seriously now and I’m big on well-being. I eat well, do an acupuncture session a week and I try to sleep well and do things to aid good sleep.

‘I don’t eat sugar, I don’t eat fried foods and I stay away from McDonald’s and chips, and things like that. For years I did every diet going – Atkins, the works – and I couldn’t work out why I couldn’t sustain the weight loss.

‘I’ve just not got the sort of body where I can pick and choose what I eat. I’ve got to go for one thing and stick by it. So I’ve tried not to have sugar and caffeine, etc, and it’s boring, it’s really boring.

‘But it works for me. The result is that I feel good.’
