Actor is set to make film about Russian agent
Johnny Depp is keen to play the poisoned former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in a new film.
The actor has bought the rights to a book: Sasha’s Story: The Life And Death Of A Russian Spy, about the ex-KGB agent who died last November after being poisoned with radioactive polonium.
According to trade magazine Variety, Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, is to start work on the project this week and it is widely believed that the 43-year-old star will play the lead role, although this is yet to be confirmed.
Johnny’s film is just one of three possible Hollywood projects about the case.
Before his death, Alexander Litvinenko, 43, said he fell ill after meeting in London with an Italian security expert to discuss possible suspects in the killing of the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya a month earlier.
In her coverage of Chechnya, Anna was highly critical of alleged human rights violations by Russian forces and by Kremlin-backed Chechen officials.
On his deathbed Alexander accused the Kremlin of being behind his poisoning, which they have denied.
