Actor regrets not calling the The Dark Knight star

Mel Gibson wishes he’d reached out to Heath Ledger, the way he did with Britney Spears.

The Dark Knight star died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January 2008 at the age of 28.

Mel, 53, who worked with Heath on 2000 film The Patriot, regrets not doing more.

‘I should have called him years before,’ he says.

‘I really didn’t know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don’t believe it was just an accident.’

Mel invited Britney, 27, and her dad Jamie to join his family on holiday in Costa Rica last year.

‘She’s a nice kid,’ he tells Jimmy Kimmel Live. ‘She was just going through a rough patch.

‘You see kids like that in the industry. I just felt like this poor kid, she’s lining up to be stoned.

‘I just thought, “I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her,” so I just called her and she’s doing great now.’
