Team GB relationship was ‘disgustingly unprofessional'

Olympic cycling star Victoria Pendleton has spoken out about the furore that erupted when her relationship with British cycling team’s sports scientist Scott Gardner was first revealed.

Victoria fell for Scott shortly before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, but the pair were forced to put their love on hold until after the competition ended to avoid upsetting the team.

After winning a gold medal in the sprint, the cyclist was brought down to earth by the reaction to her budding romance.

The sh*t hit the fan,’ says Victoria, 31.

And what should have been the happiest moment of my life turned out to be the most hideous.

I honestly left the Olympics feeling like I’d committed a crime – like I’d killed somebody.’

The pair knew that one of them would have to leave the team due to their ‘disgustingly unprofessional’ union and Scott decided to go.

Victoria, who has since got engaged to the former Team GB data analyst, admits that the reaction of others was upsetting.

Some people reacted very negatively,’ she tells Esquire magazine.

It was tough. Shocking, painful and uncomfortable. It hurt.’
