Team GB star's father passed away in 2011

Tom Daley won an Olympic bronze medal in the men’s 10m platform diving on Saturday, watched by his devoted mum Debbie – and millions of fans worldwide.

The teenager knows that dad Rob, who passed away in 2011 following a battle with brain cancer, would have been just as proud.

So did he sense his late father’s presence ‘in spirit’?

I think so,’ says Tom, 18, I know how much it meant to him.’

Now the Daley family are celebrating and his home city of Plymouth can’t wait to welcome Tom home.

I’m so happy. After losing my dad, and all the tough experiences and hard times, it’s about time my family had some good news,’ he tells the Daily Mail.

Although it’s a bronze medal, for me it’s like a gold medal as it’s a symbol of all the hard work I have put in.

It’s one of those things I have wanted for so long, to compete in front of a home crowd and I wanted it to go the way I wanted it to.’
