The Duchess was due to go to Edinburgh, not St Andrews

Kate Middleton met Prince William at the University of St Andrews when they were undergraduates – at least that’s what we all thought.

But, Katie Nicoll – The Mail on Sunday’s Royal Editor – reveals in her new book Kate: The Future Queen that Kate and Wills had already been mixing in the same social circles before they started studying in Scotland.

The 31-year-olds first set eyes on each other in the summer of 1999, while both still at school.

Through her Marlborough College friend Emilia d’Erlanger, Kate was introduced to the Glosse Posse, who regularly met at Highgrove, in Gloucestershire.

‘We all knew as teachers that that year group was moving in Royal circles, that they were friends,’ says Kate‘s house mistress Ann Patching.

Kate got the A-levels she need to go Edinburgh but, it’s claimed, changed her mind after it was made public that William had opted for St Andrews – and also decided on a gap year so they’d start at the same time.

Well, if you want to dazzle your Prince Charming, he has to be close enough to see you shine.
