Heiress Paris Hilton in court for hearing
Paris Hilton has pleaded guilty to drug possession and obstructing an officer following an arrest last month.
The heiress accepted the misdemeanour charges at a hearing in Las Vegas yesterday as part of a plea deal to avoid jail.
She was instead given a one-year suspended sentence, fined $2,00 (£1,280) and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service.
If she breaks her probation in the next year, Paris will be sent to prison.
‘If she is arrested for anything besides a minor traffic violation she will spend a year in jail,’ Clark County District Attorney David Roger tells the Associated Press.
‘There will be no discussion. The court will have no discretion.’
Paris, 29, is also planning to attend an outpatient substance abuse programme.
She was arrested on 26 August in Las Vegas after police found 0.8g of cocaine in her purse.
Paris was charged with obstruction because she initially told officers the bag and drugs were not hers.
Earlier this summer, she was questioned by South African police for allegedly smoking marijuana and later held in Corsica after being allegedly caught with a small amount of pot in her purse.
Paris was released without being charged on both occasions.
