The Atomic Kitten star suffers from bipolar disorder

Kerry Katona is concerned that her children may suffer from mental health problems.

The mum-of-four – who’s expecting her fifth child with fianc√© George Kay – was diagnosed with bipolar disorder several years ago and she fears that her kids could be affected by similar illnesses.

Mental illness affects one in four people and it runs in my family,’ says Kerry, 33.

I’m going to have to make sure I’m always tuned in to their emotional needs.

I can’t control genetics but if I can give my children the love and security I never had, hopefully I can protect them from mental illness.’

Kerry had a difficult childhood, spending a lot of time in care due to mum Sue’s battles with manic depression.

She’s recently been filming a documentary about mental illness so that she can learn more about the genetic links that appear to have affected her family.

I want to know if my kids are risk or if my traumatic childhood was really to blame,’ Kerry tells The Sun.

It was a very difficult thing to do but I wanted to understand more about why I am the way I am.’
