Finally, the royal baby name is announced!
The new royal baby name has been announced: Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
In a moving tribute to Prince William‘s late mother Princess Diana, he and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge have given Princess Charlotte two middle names – Elizabeth after the Queen and Diana.
A Kensington Palace statement said: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.’
Charlotte and Alice were the 3/1 joint bookies favourites, with Victoria 5/1 and Elizabeth 6/1 following.
According to royal sources, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had decided on a name for their daughter but waited until Monday at 3pm to publicly release it as they wanted to inform the Queen personally.
The young family were expected to leave Kensington Palace and head to their home in Norfolk on Monday and introduce Princess Charlotte to her great-grandmother. The Queen is currently in residence at Sandringham in Norfolk.
There are no royal rules which say the Queen must be consulted about a royal name but it’s believed Prince William wanted his grandmother to meet Princess Charlotte before her name was announced to the world.
On Sunday the Queen attended St Mary Magdalene church in Sandringham with Prince Philip and was seen smiling as they left. Rector the Rev Jonathan Riviere referred to the princess in prayers only as ‘a little girl’.
As Kate and William settled into life as a family of four with Princess Charlotte and big brother Prince George, a Kensington Palace spokesman said in a statement on Sunday: ‘The duke and duchess are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world. It means a great deal to them that so many people have celebrated the arrival of their new daughter.
‘Their royal highnesses were today visited by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Mr and Mrs Middleton, and Pippa Middleton.’
Prince Harry – who is currently in Australia – said of his new niece Princess Charlotte: ‘She is absolutely beautiful. I can’t wait to meet her.’
Kate‘s mother Carole and her sister Pippa were first to arrive at Kensington Palace at 11.31am and have a cuddle
with the little princess. They left about 6pm.
Meanwhile, Prince Charles drove himself down from Highgrove in Gloucestershire, with the Duchess of Cornwall, to
meet the granddaughter he admitted last week he hoped for.
Princess Charlotte was born at 8.34am on Saturday 2 May weighing 8lb 3oz.
Over the weekend Princess Diana‘s best friend, Rosa Monckton, wrote on Twitter: ‘How Diana would have loved a granddaughter.’
Rosa then posted a picture of Diana with her daughter Dominica, who was her godchild.
