Countdown presenter donates his corneas

Late TV presenter Richard has helped two people see again.

His long-term partner Kathryn Apanowicz gave the go-ahead for his corneas to be transplanted less than 48 hours after he died, telling nurses: ‘It is what he would have wanted.’

Richard Whiteley died last year, aged 61, after battling pneumonia.

Speaking about her decision for the first time, Kathryn said yesterday: ‘I’m a firm believer that if you’re willing to receive a transplant, you should be willing to be a donor, and Richard felt the same.

‘I have no doubt that agreeing for Richard’s tissues to be used to benefit someone else was the right thing to do.’
