Comic regrets joke about promise rings

Russell Brand said sorry for teasing the Jonas Brothers about being virgins as he hosted the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

‘Well done the Jonas Brothers. Each wear a ring to say they are not going to have sex,’ he said.

‘I’d take them more seriously if they wore it around their genitals.’

But his joke about Nick, 15, Joe, 18, and Kevin, 20, wasn’t well received by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, 18.

‘It’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut,’ she said as she collected her award.

Russ, 33, then gave a grovelling apology as he resumed his presenting duties.

‘I love the Jonas Brothers, think they’re really good,’ he said.

‘I don’t want to p*** off teenage fans, all right. In fact, quite the opposite.

‘So promise rings, I’m well up for it, well done.’

Russ also labelled President George Bush a ‘retard’ and called Britney Spears ‘the female Christ’.
