Pierce's girl loses battle with ovarian cancer
Pierce Brosnan has paid an emotional tribute to his daughter Charlotte after she passed away on Friday.
The Mamma Mia! star released a statement last night confirming that Charlotte, 42, had lost her three-year battle with ovarian cancer, the same disease that killed her mother Cassandra in 1991.
‘On June 28 at 2pm my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer,’ Pierce, 60, says in a statement to People.
‘She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean.
‘Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl.
‘We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.’
Budding actress Charlotte and her brother Chris were Cassandra’s children from her first marriage to Dermot Harris, the brother of late actor Richard Harris.
They were adopted by Pierce, who married their mum in 1980, following the death of their biological father in 1985.
The Irish actor – who married second wife Keely Shaye Smith in 2001 – has previously spoken of his pain over losing Charlotte’s mum Cassandra to ovarian cancer when she was just 43.
‘I went through it all, very publicly,’ Pierce tells the Daily Mirror.
‘Such things draw a mark across your heart and it’s always a part of your life.
‘To watch someone you love have their life eaten away – bit by bit, by this insidious and horrid disease – becomes an indelible part of your psyche.’
