Comedian and actor Rik Mayall passed away today

Rik Mayall, comedy partner of Adrian Edmondson, has died at the age of 56.

Best known for his roles as Rick in The Young Ones and Alan B’Stard in The New Statesman, Rik died this morning, a spokesman for Brunskill Management has revealed.

Rik was nearly crushed to death in 1998 and spent 5 days in a coma after a quad bike accident at his Devon farm that left him with a fractured skull and severe haemorrhaging.

‘I beat Jesus Christ,’ he quipped. ‘He was dead for three days at Easter. When I crashed it was the day before Good Friday, Crap Thursday, and I was technically dead until Easter Monday – that’s five days … beat him 5-3.’

Rik‘s manager Roger Davidson says: ‘It is a terrible shock. All we know at this stage is that Rik died at home.

‘We are all deeply saddened by this news, from the enormous
number of fans Rik had to those who worked with him and knew him as a
man as well as a fine actor.

‘He touched many lives, and always for the better.’

Rik is survived by make-up artist wife Barbara Robbin and children Rosie, 28, Sidney, 26, and Bonnie, 19.
