Footballer is likely to miss the World Cup
An emotional Becks was stretchered off the pitch as his team AC Milan beat Chievo 1-0 in Italy.
It means he could now miss the World Cup in South Africa in June.
‘He’s not doing well,’ says teammate Ignazio Abate. ‘He was in tears in the dressing room, he wasn’t saying a lot.’
David, 34, who has been on loan to AC Milan from LA Galaxy since January, will fly to Finland today for surgery at the clinic of knee specialist Dr Sakari Orava.
‘We will have to see whether the tendon is completely severed, partly severed, or something in between,’ Dr Orava tells the BBC.
‘His recovery will depend on what kind of an injury this is, but it will likely take several months before it is completely healed.’
England manager Fabio Capello has already offered his condolences to David.
‘I spoke with him after the game on Sunday night to offer my support,’ he said in a statement.
‘David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow.’
