In his most candid interview ever, Simon Cowell opens up about fatherhood and how he coped with losing his mum

When Simon Cowell lost his beloved mother Julie, aged 89, in July he was visibly shaken but speaking to Good Morning Britain presenter Susannah Reid last week he opened up about how he’s finally come to terms with the shock of losing his her.

‘You’re not the only person, obviously, who goes through this and we all deal with it in our own way,’ he told the tv presenter. ‘I deal with it because I always believe she’s still here, same with my dad – I talk to them. I always feel their presence and I genuinely believe that once you get over that initial shock, you deal with it in a different way.

Simon Cowell admits to having ‘too much botox’

‘Funnily enough, when I watched the show I thought: “If my mum could see
this now, me swearing on TV, I actually think she would have given me a whack!” And that did make me chuckle. That’s when you realise they’re still there with you.’

Simon, 56 went on to describe how fatherhood has changed his life after becoming enchanted by his 20-month old son Eric who he has with Lauren Silverman – the woman credited for finally taming the infamous playboy.

‘I’m great with puppies – I wasn’t great with babies,’ he said. ‘A puppy will respond: babies at a certain age don’t do anything. So when he was about five or six [months old] I was like: “I don’t know what to do!” He wasn’t reacting to me and I thought: “Maybe he hates me?” Then suddenly one day they’re talking, listening, responding. Now talking to him, communicating, is a whole different ball game.
And they sort of become a bit like you, which I don’t know is a good or a bad thing! He’s a funny little thing. He loves music – and when I say loves it, loves it! Fortunately one of the first records I got on tape of him playing along to was a One Direction record, so he’s got good taste.’

Good Morning Britain is on ITV from 6-8.30am on weekdays
