It sounds as though Stephen Fry isn't a fan of 'horrible' Little Mix, after he called their sound 'the musical equivalent of Haribo Starmix'
We think you’ll agree that Little Mix are pretty darn wonderful. They’re super fun, utterly gorgeous and know a thing or two about creating a cracking pop tune.
But one person who doesn’t share that view, it turns out, is professional boffin Stephen Fry, who has ripped into the former X Factor winners – made up of Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall, Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, calling their music ‘hideous’ and ‘toxic’. Bit harsh, Stephen!
The soon-to-be-ex QI host (he recently stepped down after 13 long years heading up the highbrow quiz show), who tends to prefer classical music to mainstream hits, was asked to given his verdict on various songs from the last 12 months by BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat – and he didn’t appear to enjoy the experience.
When played Little Mix’s track Love Me Like You, Stephen’s reaction was pretty extreme, with the 58 year old exclaiming: ‘Horrible. Oh horrible! It’s just bubblegum pop. They’re not still singing sha-la-la-la are they?’
He added: ‘It’s got bits of Phil Spector right at the background through ’70s bubblegum pop into a modern version. It’s a hideous, toxic compound. It’s the musical equivalent of Haribo Starmix.’
We can’t help but think that if they’d just played him Black Magic – or maybe Move – his opinion would have been different. Because who could fail to love those banging hits!?
Justin Bieber fared a little better, with Stephen confessing ‘he’s got a better voice than I thought he had’ – but also described his song Love Yourself as ‘dreary’ and ‘moany’. Ouch.
He also confessed to enjoyed Slaves track Hey, saying he ‘likes the drums’ and likening them to Led Zeppelin. High praise indeed!
