Katie Derham and original Strictly dancing professional have their eyes set on the trophy

Strictly Come Dancing’s Katie Derham is not letting silly things like ‘fix’ allegations, appearance-shamers or even age get in the way of winning the BBC One show. In fact, Kate and dancing partner Anton Du Beke relish the underdog status.

Speaking to Metro, the 45-year-old said, ‘It’s just nuts, but brilliant, and I am delighted. I’m flying the flag for women of a certain age.’

Oh boy is she. Strictly has come under fire in the past when original judge Arlene Phillips was replaced by the much younger – and, arguably, less experienced – former winner Alesha Dixon. Katie has faced backlash because of her age, with one critic blasting her for showing off her long legs in the short dance dresses (as if she doesn’t look AMAZING).

Well Katie is dancing in the face of any ageism by planning to ‘pull out all the stops’ to win Anton he’s first ever final.

‘Anton is so chuffed to be in the final. I am just trying to keep up so I don’t let him down on the night.

‘We are underdogs and that’s fine – that’s a happy place to be.’

Of course, Katie hasn’t avoided the ‘fixing’ storm currently sweeping through British TV. On Sunday, fingers were pointed at her after Anita Rani and professional Gleb Savchenko were voted out by the judges despite attaining better scores on Saturday.

‘I have been surprised that anyone has found much to complain about,’ Katie told the paper. ‘We all have this tendency in the UK to not let anything get too big for its boots. I think that’s what’s happened in the last week or two.’

Strictly has been dominating weekend TV, beating bitter rival X Factor almost every week. So Katie believes, with all that success, people are bound to find a problem with it, despite the show being, ‘the ultimate benign happy friendly family show.’

Well we’re glad Katie is putting all the allegations behind her and steam rolling towards the final. She’s got some tough competition in Jay McGuiness, Georgia May Foote and Kellie Bright. Hopefully her Viennese waltz can, err, waltz her into first place and wave that trophy for ‘women of a certain age’ everywhere!
