Olympic diver was disappointed after 4th place finish

Tom Daley’s mum Debbie spotted her son’s Olympic synchronised reverse three-and-a-half somersault with tuck hadn’t gone to plan – and knew he’d be devastated.

Tom, 18, and partner Peter Waterfield lost out in a medal after getting out of sync.

I didn’t know the 4th dive was wrong until they went into the water,’ says Debbie, 41.

I never do. But I could tell that as they hit the pool their synchro was out and that the execution had been far from perfect.

Even I know when the twisty, turny, spinny stuff isn’t right.

It was maddening because usually that is one of their best dives. They went on to perform well but it was not enough to put them back in contention.’

Debbie admires how, despite the upset of the disappointment, her usually bubbly son soon had his positive outlook back.

He was gutted and I was gutted for him,’ Debbie tells The Mail On Sunday.

I did not see him for 3 hours after the competition, by which time he had regained his composure and was his usual jovial self.

But I know how much it hurt.’
