Footballer Danny Simpson was arrested following a violent row with ex-girlfriend Stephanie Ward
Tulisa Contostavlos‘ ex-boyfriend Danny Simpson is potentially facing jail after being convicted of assaulting the mother of his child.
The 28-year-old footballer has been found guilty of throttling former girlfriend Stephanie Ward following a drunken row in the early hours of 29 December last year.
Leicester City player Danny was discovered straddling Stephanie with both of his hands around her throat when police arrived at the scene in Worsley, Greater Manchester after receiving a 999 call.
PC Gareth Hughes was the first officer at the house and told the trial: ‘I could hear screams and crying and then silence. I could then hear a choking sound.’
The policeman also revealed how he had to ‘drag’ Danny away by his arm before the footballer shouted to Stephanie: ‘Tell them I wasn’t doing anything.’
Stephanie – who has a little girl with Danny – gave an account to officers at the scene but later withdrew her statement and didn’t support the prosecution.
Danny claims that the row erupted after he and Stephanie had been out for dinner. After arguing over text messages he said that it moved on to a spat over expensive shoes he’d previously bought Stephanie for Christmas, which he wanted back.
‘I didn’t think she deserved the shoes,’ he explained at the trial. ‘She was on the sofa and I was trying to get them off her.’
The dad-of-one’s story was deemed ‘unworthy of belief’ by Manchester District Judge Alexandra Simmons.
Despite denying the charge of assault by beating, Danny was found guilty at Manchester Magistrates Court on Wednesday and will be sentenced next month.
Prior to his current club Leicester City, Danny played for the likes of Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers. He previously hit the headlines for dating Tulisa Contostavlos for around six months before they split in May 2013.
