The Dancing On Ice star has become a big softy

Vanilla Ice has changed. Gone are the baggy pants, quiff and attitude that we all knew back in the day – he’s even dropped the Vanilla.

The 2011 version is more friendly family man than rude rap star and he’s arguably the most popular contestant on this year’s Dancing On Ice.

Ice, aka Robert Matthew Van Winkle, 43, has turned his back on his dark days.

‘Yeah, I was on the self-destruct path and didn’t know my purpose in life because I couldn’t buy myself happiness. Life sucked,’ he admits.

‘I’ve had a few times when I wouldn’t wish my life on my worst enemy. I’ve been through the wringer. I’ve done the rock star thing.’

Being a dad made Vanilla Ice change his ways.

‘I finally figured out who I am – I’m Rob, the family guy, the rock star dad. My kids love me, they think I’m the shit.

‘I straightened up, I did it on my own. I had to eliminate the guys I’d grown up with – all my friends – because they just wanted to party.

‘I had to change my phone numbers, go through therapy. I’ve been chewed up and spat out and I’m still here. It’s a good comeback story.’
