Grieving Celine Dion was overwhelmed with emotion as she spoke of the 'love of my life', late husband René Angélil
Celine Dion broke down in tears as she paid tribute to her late husband, René Angélil, in a moving speech, calling him ‘the love of my life’.
The emotion proved too much for the singer as she took to the stage in Las Vegas on Wednesday for a special service – live streamed across the world – in honour of her husband of 22 years.
Addressing the room at Ceaser’s Palace, where she currently has a residency, Celine recalled precious memories of René and thanked the crowd of friends and family for their love and support.
She said: ‘Let me start by saying good evening good friends. Rene, the love of my life, would be so happy to know we are here together. I feel the love in this room.
‘This is my home away from home. At the same time I’m supposed to feel extremely comfortable being home and right now. I’m not sure how comfortable I feel.’
She went on to speak of her husband’s kind nature, saying: ‘René never hated anyone. Is it possible someone loves everybody?
‘I don’t think so. But he never told me a person he disliked… Time was precious to him. He loved life so much, so very much.’
She ended her moving speech by saying: ‘On behalf of my family thank you again for being with us this evening. For this beautiful tribute to mon amour.
‘Rene, I love you so much. Merci. Goodnight.’
Celine’s husband of 22 years sadly died from throat cancer last month at the age of 73. He had been battling the illness for 17 years.
In the final months of his life the iconic singer was her husband’s full time carer, cancelling all engagements to be by his side.
