See Eddie Redmayne transformed from a man into a woman in the first trailer for new transgender biopic The Danish Girl

The many issues faced by the transgender community have been culturally front and centre in recent months (great work, Caitlyn Jenner), and they’re about to making even bigger strides towards understanding and acceptance thanks to a new movie starring British actor Eddie Redmayne.

Following hot in the (high-heeled) footsteps of Caitlyn’s courageous journey, Eddie is set to star as real-life transgender woman Lili Elbe in new film The Danish Girl – and the first trailer, released today, has left us in tears thanks to Eddie’s moving transformation from man to woman.

The two-and-a-half-minute trailer first shows Eddie as artist Einar Wegener before his character transitions into Lili, with the support of wife Gerda.

Set in the 1920s, the film is based on the story of Danish-born Lili, one of the first people on record to undergo sex reassignment surgery.

The transformation in Eddie is incredible, with the actor seen donning a short red wig, applying make-up and slipping into a variety of glamorous gowns as his character builds up to the never-before-tried surgery.

‘This is not my body,’ Lili is seen saying, adding of her male persona: ‘I have to let him go.’

Whispers are already circulating that the role could see former Burberry model Eddie win a second successive Academy Award for his awe-inspiring performance in the film, which is set to hit cinemas on New Year’s Day 2016.

The 33-year-old star won the Oscar for Best Actor earlier this year for his portrayal of super physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

But, even if he doesn’t bring home any gongs for his latest film, the transgender community are sure to take Eddie to their hearts as the latest hero flying the flag for transgendered people everywhere.
