As Whitney's laid to rest, friends ask: could she have been saved?

Last Saturday, the world watched as one of the bestselling female artists ever was laid to rest.

Global icon Whitney Houston was remembered at the New Hope Baptist Church in her hometown of Newark, but the tears from her family and celeb friends, including Alicia Keys and Kevin Costner, were not only those of grief.

There was an undercurrent of anger – for, tragically, they knew Whitney could’ve been saved.

When the singer was found dead at the age of 48 in her bathtub at the Beverly Hilton on 11 February after a suspected booze and prescription drugs binge, questions were immediately asked.

The former addict, who sold over 170 million records worldwide, had been to rehab several times, most recently in May 2011.

So why did she have unlimited access to alcohol? Who was prescribing her so many drugs? Why didn’t her entourage realise she’d fallen unconscious in the bath? And why did no one intervene to get the professional help she so clearly needed?

Malik Pointer, son of Pointer Sisters singer Ruth, called Whitney ‘his aunt’.

He tells Now: ‘This shouldn’t have happened. She was planning to stage a big comeback with a new album and tour.

‘She was looking more like the old Whitney. She’d put weight back on and seemed happy. It’s such a tragedy.’

Whitney‘s mum Cissy received a call from the singer less than 30 minutes before she was found.

According to sources, Whitney vowed she’d go back to rehab to tackle her addictions for good once the Grammys were over. ‘She said she wanted to “enjoy herself” first,’ reveals an insider.

Now questions are being raised about whether she should’ve even been allowed to make the trip to LA in the days before her death to attend mentor Clive Davis‘s pre-Grammy party.
