The tennis champ's biographer on his secret heartache
So the question is: after nearly eight years together, why hasn’t Andy, 26, put a ring on it?
In a Now exclusive, Andy‘s long-time friend and biographer Mark Hodgkinson reveals the real reason: he’s wary of marriage after his parents’ divorce.
‘They split when Andy was nine and he found that really difficult,’ says Mark.
‘He saw what they went through and although he’s not against marriage he’s fearful of rushing into it.
‘Kim completely respects that.’
Mark adds: ‘He definitely wants to be a dad too – but not until he’s retired because while he’s still playing he’s away from home for nine months a year.
‘So he’s got another few years before that.’
Andy‘s admitted he struggled with the animosity between mum Judy, 53, and dad William, 58, as a child, saying: ‘I’d get stuck in the middle of their arguments.
‘I’d get really upset and I would’ve loved more than anything to have a family that worked better together, although I love them to bits.’
He began dating Kim, then 17, after the French Open in 2005 but they briefly split in 2009 when she struggled with his tennis commitments.
Andy spent six months winning her back and they moved into a £5 million house in Oxshott, Surrey, in 2010.
Mark reveals that Kim ‘washes Andy‘s kit, cuts his hair as he never goes to the hairdressers and even used to drive him to matches’.
Could this be his secret wedding bolt hole?
If and when Andy finally does wed Kim, he already has the perfect venue.
He’s just started renovating the £1.8 million Cromlix Hotel near his home town Dunblane, which he bought in February.
His brother Jamie, 27, got married there in 2010.
