The blonde beauty left the show due to an illness in the family

Zara Holland has quit Love Island after her mum Cheryl Hakeney was taken ill.

A statement released by the ITV show read: ‘Owing to an illness in the family, Zara Holland has left the Love Island villa to return to the UK. Our thoughts are with her and her family and we send all of our best wishes.’

Zara – who had her Miss GB title stripped earlier this week – said: ‘I’m so sad to leave the villa but it’s important for me to get home and spend time with my mum while she gets better.

‘I’ve had the time of my life on Love Island and would like to thank all of my fellow Islanders and the production team for all their support.’

It may not be the last we see of the blonde beauty though, as the show’s bosses are said to be be leaving the door open for her to return – depending on the circumstances in the villa.

Zara learned of her mum’s illness on Saturday and decided to quit the show and fly home to England.

Not sure what my hand is doing😆 but I love my mum❤️☀️ she's the best. #loveyou #mum #thebest #london

The sad news comes after a tough week for Zara, which also saw her stripped of her Miss Great Britain title after she had sex with fellow Islander Alex Bowen on the show.

In a statement released on Friday, the Miss GB powers that be said: ‘The feedback we have received from pageant insiders and members of the general public is such that we cannot promote Zara as a positive role model moving forward.

‘We wholly understand that everyone makes mistakes, but Zara, as an ambassador for Miss Great Britain, simply did not uphold the responsibility expected of the title.’

Love Island host Caroline Flack soon hit out at the decision, asking in a tweet: ‘Are we living in the dark ages?’
