I wanted to see Wham! do their stuff
I confess I missed the Olympic Games 2012 Opening Ceremony and had to watch it online.
But Danny Boyle’s extravaganza was pretty impressive and everyone was raving about it.
Last week I screamed at the TV when Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford all won gold medals on the same night and this Sunday I stayed in to watch the London 2012 Closing Ceremony.
Blimey, I thought, when George Michael, 49, appeared looking all slim and perky in black leather and showbiz sunnies. Off he went into 1990’s Freedom and everything was looking good.
I was keeping my fingers crossed that Andrew Ridgeley – with hair as white as Brian May’s – was going to bounce on stage holding a giant inflatable guitar to do a special version of Wham!‘s Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.
Just for one joyous moment, I believed it might really happen.
Sadly, no chance, Andrew was probably too busy surfing or playing golf or whatever he does now – if indeed anyone even said to him, ‘Here, Andrew, mate – fancy doing an Olympics gig?’.
So George sang new single White Light, which no one recognised, and everything went a bit flat.
‘I hope you are not bothered by the press reports of my scandalous ‘promotion’!!!‘ George told his Twitter followers today.
Well, I am. I’m glad he survived pneumonia and has stopped getting arrested asleep in his car, but I would have loved a bit of Club Tropicana.
