Aww! Benedict Cumberbatch is being bashful about his looks
Of all the things I’ve read about Sherlock Holmes star Benedict Cumberbatch lately (which is a LOT) what shocked me the most was his confession, ‘I think I’ve got a long face. I look a bit weird.’
It’s true that with his red hair and angular face, Benedict is hardly a typical Hollywood sex symbol, but maybe that’s the point.
In a celeb-led culture, it’s refreshing to find an actor astonished by his legion of female admirers.
High-profile roles such as Sherlock Holmes on TV and another three films due out this autumn (The Fifth Estate, August: Osage County and 12 Years A Slave) have earned Benedict an ever-increasing fanbase.
‘Do I like being thought of as attractive?’ he muses. ‘I don’t know
anyone who doesn’t, but I do find it funny.
‘I look in a mirror
and I see all the faults I’ve lived with and yet people go kind of nuts
for certain things about me. It’s not me being humble. I just think it’s
But fans (hello fellow Cumberbitches!) can find no fault.
‘Mr Cumberbatch, everyone
loves you for a myriad of reasons: your personality, looks, hair,
cheekbones, you name it,’ declares one devoted member of the Cumberclan in a Reddit AMA Q&A, asking the actor: ‘What’s your favourite part?’
Benedict responds: ‘As an
actor, your eyes are vital in conveying any internal thought process or
feeling and for that I have my mum [actress Wanda Ventham] to thank.’ Ah well…
Another fan asks: ‘Do you, Matt Smith and Tom Hiddleston have cheekbone polishing parties?’
To which he quips back: ‘We like nothing better than buffing our zygoma.’
Sounds like fun…
