Ginger Spice and the long-haired lothario are a perfect match - but are they too similar for it to last?

Pals say it’s a ‘very serious’ relationship. A spokesman says they’re ‘just good friends’. Whatever Geri Halliwell, 40, and Russell Brand, 37, are really up to, I can’t believe they’ve not tried getting together sooner.

They’ve already ‘shared a romantic date’, taking Geri’s six-year-old daughter Bluebell Madonna (‘mazin) to Hampton Court Palace, and Russell was spotted leaving her house the other night with a bag full of books.

After running into her at the Olympics Closing Cermony a few weeks ago on 12 August he said, ‘I’ve got a crush on Geri Halliwell, everything in the world is as it should be‘.

Whether or not he was joking, he’s got a point – they’re so similar, they should be together.

I love a new celebrity couple. It’s exciting when they have loads in common (although always amusing when two unlikely ones get together – Catherine Tate and Jason Orange, anyone?) and Geri and Russell will have plenty to talk about over their wheatgrass shots.

Both are armchair philosophers, both fascinated by eastern religions and meditation, both adore reading.

Everyone knows they’re yoga devotees who regularly exhibit their dedication to the discipline. Geri loves it so much she’s even released a couple of yoga workout DVDs, while Russell was spotted leaving daily classes in LA as he got over his split from ex-wife Katy Perry.

Russell and Geri are also both a handful. The type of celeb who thinks they’re low maintenance but is actually the opposite.

Which isn’t a bad thing (hey, if I was a celebrity and had people offering to do things for me and get things for me and take care of things for me, I’d probably be higher maintenance than Suri Cruise in a kids’ shoe department), but having met both separately, it’s a fair observation to say they’re kindred spirits on the eccentric front.

Each is charming, intelligent, nonconformist and unafraid to speak out on anything they’re passionate about. Both wear their hearts on their sleeves.

But I fear while they’ll initially be hugely attracted by this mirror image of extreme character traits they see in each other, those kind of personalities work best in a relationship where there’s a calmer, more ‘normal’ partner to balance the other out.

Whatever happens, and whether they’re dating or just hanging out as mates, it’s certainly going to be an interesting one to watch.
