As Danny Dyer says 'yes', whoever said it's a 'man's job' to propose, asks Amy Brookbanks
Firstly, I’d like to say a huge congratulations to Joanne Mas and her new fiancé Danny Dyer, who got engaged on Valentine’s Day when SHE proposed to HIM.
Not your typical ‘man gets down on bended knee’ scenario, but who cares? After all, whoever said it’s a ‘man’s job to propose?’
Personally, I’d never propose to a man because I’m all for making a man do the chasing… I like to know they’re in it for the long haul, because relationships only work if the man never stops doing what he did to get you in the first place.
But, the fact is, despite their ups and downs, Danny never stopped loving Joanne. And they have proved that their romance is about more than just hearts and flowers or the thrill of the chase – they’re childhood sweethearts, best friends who have been together for 25 years and have three children. Yes, Jo broke with tradition – so what? – but finally, the love of her life agreed to marry her, so isn’t that truly wonderful?
I love Danny – he’s a normal down-to-earth, great bloke, an amazing actor and a family man and they deserve every happiness. And most importantly, so does Jo – she’s been Danny‘s rock and has stood by him, for better or worse, through everything. She proved she’s wife material years ago.
It’s well-documented that Danny has been a man behaving badly over the years, but he always knew he was on to a good thing with Jo and he never left her – despite cheating on her several times. Thankfully, Jo was strong enough to cope with his infidelities and the public scrutiny into her relationship while trying to protect her children and romance, and for that she deserves more than just diamonds, she deserves a bloody medal!
This week he admitted: ‘I thought the grass was greener, but it was horrible and I never want to go there again.’ And Jo has always remained dignified and has forgiven his actions, although admitting that she found it hard to cope: ‘It’s been hard but I’ve got over it. When you have children, it isn’t just about me and Danny. I wouldn’t destroy the lives of my babies for something that doesn’t matter.’
And so theirs is a marriage that will work and they will be together forever. She isn’t going to get any shocks because she knows him inside out – after 25 years she’s seen him at his worst and yet she still loves him. The fact it’s taken them 25 years proves that they believe marriage is much more than just a piece of paper – and that they can promise to love, honour and respect them for the rest of their lives.
Hopefully now Jo has the commitment from Danny that she’s always wanted and deserves, after all, Danny admitted himself: ‘She’s already done a 25 year stretch.’ Congratulations you two!
