Spending her early life in Buckinghamshire, Fern attended Dr Challoner’s High School at Little Chalfont. She later trained in stage management at London’s Central School Of Speech And Drama.

Fern began her TV career in the south west of England reading local news bulletins for both the BBC and Westward Television’s nightly show Westward Diary.

In the mid-1980s, she read the national news on the BBC’s Breakfast Time and occasionally presented on the sofa with Frank Bough.

The presenter has since worked on GMTV, London News Network’s London Tonight and BBC One’s Holiday.

Fern married TV executive Clive Jones on 12 November 1988 in Southsea. The couple had twin sons Jack and Harry in 1994 and daughter Grace in 1997. They split in 1998.

In 1994, Fern Britton presented the popular TV cookery show Ready Steady Cook, which she continued until 2000.

She met her second husband Phil Vickery through the programme. After dating for a year, the couple married in 2000 and had daughter Winnie in 2001.

When Fern joined This Morning with Phillip Schofield in 1999, the show’s viewing figures rose considerably.

On 25 March 2009 and after 10 years on the programme, Fern announced that she was leaving This Morning at the end of that series.

She teamed up with Phillip Schofield again to present All Star Mr & Mrs on Saturday nights. Fern co-hosted the show from April 2008 to 2010.

In May 2008, Fern announced that she had had a gastric band fitted to help her lose weight.

She received criticism for previously claiming that she had lost weight naturally through diet and exercise.

While keeping her surgery a secret, Fern appeared in advertisements promoting Ryvita as a method of losing weight and had even produced an exercise video.

From 29 November 2009, she hosted a series for BBC One called Fern Britton Meets… in which she interviewed high profile personalities about their religious beliefs.

Fern Britton took part in the tenth series of Strictly Come Dancing. She was eliminated from the competition on 11 November 2012, after losing the dance-off to Kimberley Walsh.
