Rihanna was born in Barbados to dad Ronald Fenty and mum Monica Braithwaite in 1988. She has two younger brothers called Rorrey and Rajad.

Her father battled addictions to crack cocaine and alcohol. Ri-Ri’s parents divorced when she was 14.

The youngster always loved to sing. In her teens she moved to the US to pursue a music career and, after auditioning for Jay-Z at Def Jam Records, was signed on the spot.

Rihanna released her debut single Pon De Replay in 2005 and it was a huge hit. First album Music Of The Sun soon followed.

After her second album A Girl Like Me, Ri-Ri returned with an edgier image in 2007. She had her biggest hit to date with Umbrella and the album Good Girl Gone Bad spawned several popular tracks.

Rihanna‘s private life hit the headlines in February 2009 when she was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown before the Grammys, leaving her battered and bruised. Later in the year she released the dark record Rated R.

Chris was sentenced to five years’ probation and 180 days of community labour for the attack. Despite the incident the couple confirmed that they’d reunited in 2013 but soon split again.

Meanwhile Ri-Ri’s career has gone from strength to strength. Her successful albums include Loud, Talk That Talk and Unapologetic. She has also had several chart-topping hits.

The singer has become a sex symbol and fashion icon, known for her daring sense of style.

She got people talking when she wore a completely see-through dress to collect the 2014 Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards in June.

Rihanna has also branched out into acting, having starred in the 2012 film Battleship.

The singer has released perfumes, a clothing collection for River Island and has been the face of MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam range.
