Before finding fame with One Direction, Zayn Malik was born Zain Malik to British Pakistani father Yaser and English mother Tricia in 1993.

He changed the spelling of his first name after finding fame on The X Factor.

He has an older sister Doniya and two younger sisters Waliyha and Safaa.

Zayn auditioned for The X Factor in 2010. He was put through to the next round but failed to make it to the judges’ houses stage as a solo contestant.

However, he was later given a lifeline when Simon Cowell put him into boy band One Direction. Zayn Malik was placed with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Liam Payne.

The group proved extremely popular with the public but only finished third.

Zayn hit the headlines when fellow contestant Rebecca – seven years his senior – became his girlfriend, but they split four months later.

In 2012 the singer made Little Mix member Perrie Edwards his girl and they got engaged in August 2013.

Zayn had a highly successful career with 1D. The boys toured all over the world and released numerous hit singles and albums.

After taking a break in March 2015 due to ‘stress’ whilst on tour with One Direction, Zayn Malik announced that he was quitting the group altogether.

In August 2015 it was confirmed that Zayn and Perrie had ended their relationship.
