Peter is the new face of the Time Lord

Peter Capaldi is taking over from Matt Smith as the new star of Doctor Who.

His identity was revealed in a special BBC One show last night.

Scot Peter, 55 – the 12th Doctor – is one of the oldest actors to play the Time Lord.

‘It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it’s been so fantastic,’ says Peter.

‘Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.’

Peter, who will start filming his first scenes for the show this autumn, was working on a production of The Three Musketeers in Prague when he discovered he’d won the coveted role.

‘I had my phone on silent so I missed the call,’ he reveals. ‘It was my agent and I rang her up and she said, “Hello Doctor” – I haven’t stopped laughing since.’

Jenna-Louise Coleman, who plays the Doctor‘s cute assistant Clara Oswald, will not be leaving and has signed for 2014.

Matt Smith, 30, will appear in the 50th anniversary Doctor Who special in November and the
Christmas Day show.
