Mary's suitors tend to meet unfortunate ends

Downton Abbey star Julian Ovenden isn’t worried about the curse of pursuing Lady Mary.

The actor will return to his role as Charles Blake in the Christmas special of the show, where it looks like he’ll continue to vie for Mary’s affections against fellow suitor Lord Anthony Gillingham.

But Julian hopes that his character won’t meet an untimely end like many of Mary’s previous love interests have done.

Ah, Lady Mary’s death vagina?’ quips Julian, 37.

No [I won’t become the next victim], not as far as I know.’

Even though Julian doesn’t fear an early exit he admits that being a part of the period drama can be intimidating at times.

It’s quite unnerving, because there’s not a lot of lines,’ he tells The Guardian Weekend.

There are big scenes, a lot of people. It makes you fretful about getting every word you say absolutely perfect.’

The Downton Abbey Christmas special will air on Christmas Day at 8.30pm on ITV.
