Michelle Dockery admits that her relationship with her sisters is nothing like her character's

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery admits she finds it hard to relate to the tense relationships within her on-screen family.

Like her character Lady Mary Crawley, Michelle, 30, grew up as one of three sisters – but the dynamic between her real-life siblings is unlike the complex bond between Lady Mary and surviving sibling Edith Crawley.

‘We’re like best friends,’ the actress explains.

‘The tussle with Mary and Edith is something I’m not familiar with at all.

‘We’re not like that in my family – we don’t argue.

‘But the arguments are really fun to play.

Laura [Carmichael] and I are great friends, so it’s all done with a sense of humour.’

Although Michelle shares few character traits with Lady Mary, she enjoys playing the sharp-tongued toff.

‘At first she was quite vicious,’ Michelle tells S magazine.

‘But she’s become much more vulnerable and her complexities are wonderful to play.

‘She really has softened as the show has gone on.’
