Singer Jacob Lusk belts out Luther Vandross classic Dance With My Father

American Idol contestant Jacob Lusk struggled to contain his emotions through his performance of Luther Vandross classic Dance With My Father last night.

The 23-year-old sat on a stool throughout the song and fought back the tears as he remembered his late dad.

Luther Lusk! You remind me all the time the reason I love music,’ enthused show judge Steven Tyler, 63.

But Jennifer Lopez, 41, and Randy Jackson were less impressed, telling Jacob that part of being an artist is tapping into the emotion of a track without losing control.

The theme for the show was Music From The 21st Century.

Pia Toscano – who was eliminated 2 weeks ago in a shock result – and this year’s other booted singers Naima Adedapo, Karen Rodriguez, Thia Megia and Ashthon Jones all opened the programme signing Pink‘s So What.

Other performances included James Durbin taking on Muse‘s rock anthem Uprising, which was praised by the judges, and Haley Reinhart sang Adele‘s Rolling In The Deep.
