X Factor finalist Matt Cardle explains why his performance of The First Time made him so upset

Matt Cardle has revealed why he was sobbing after his performance of Roberta Flack‘s The First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face) on Saturday night’s X Factor.

The painter/decorator dedicated the poignant song to a family friend called Sharon, who died in a car accident 16 years ago.

‘My mum’s best mate was killed when I was 11 and she had four kids,’ Matt, 27, said on Saturday’s Xtra Factor.

‘My mum took on those kids and they absolutely made our family bigger and better.

‘The oldest one Julian met his girlfriend under similar circumstances and I sang that at their wedding as she came into the church.

‘The whole day was one of the most emotional of my life and it brought it all back.’

Matt‘s mum Jennifer cared for Sharon‘s 4 sons – Julian, Ben and twins Rob and Tom – after she died.

He received a standing ovation for mentor Dannii Minogue and fellow judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh after his emotional performance.
