The Gavin And Stacey actress plays the late Carry On Star

Ruth Jones is perfectly cast as Carry On actress Hattie Jacques in tonight’s one-off drama, Hattie.

The Gavin And Stacey star takes the lead role in the life story of her own comedy heroine.

‘She was an incredibly talented and fascinating woman…so much more than just the “funny fat lady”,’ says Ruth, 43.

‘It’s one of the best jobs I’ve done.’

Hattie was married to Dad’s Army actor John Le Mesurier but fell for charming young chauffeur John Schofield. She moved her lover into her home and the marital bed and her husband quietly moved to the attic.

‘The change to my mother was extraordinary, she really blossomed,’ says Hattie‘s son Robin.

Ruth Jones captured my mother perfectly –  that she was so dainty and glamorous, despite being large. It was almost painful to watch Ruth on the screen.’

Hattie‘s affair lasted 5 years, but when her young toyboy fell for someone else, she was devastated.

The happy, generous, fun-loving woman I knew never returned. It was the beginning of the end,’ Robin tells Weekend. ‘She died grieving for her lost love.’

In 1980, Hattie died from a massive heart attack, aged just 58.

Hattie airs tonight on BBC4.
