We can't WAIT to see Shayne Ward as a heartthrob new character on Coronation Street
The singer-turned-actor has signed up to play Aidan Connor, a distant cousin of Kym Marsh‘s character Michelle, and it sounds like he’s going to cause quite a stir – especially amongst the ladies.
Described in a press release as ‘good looking and charming’, Aidan will arrive on the cobbles in August when he hears that Carla Connor is having trouble at the factory.
It’s fair to say that Shayne, 30, is pretty excited about joining the soap.
‘On hearing the news I had been offered the part on the show I was in total disbelief. It still hasn’t sunk it,’ he says.
‘Shayne Ward the lad from Manchester, given such a role on such an iconic show – it is an absolute dream come true. I’m excited to walk down those famous cobbles.
‘My family and friends know just how much this means to me and I cannot wait to do them all proud. 2015 has been a great year for me so far and I look forward to joining the Coronation Street family.’
Producer Stuart Blackburn admitted that the team behind the show were ‘blown away’ by Shayne when he auditioned for the role thanks to him ‘delivering a charm and a swagger that is perfect for the character.’
Shayne had previously made no secret of the fact that he was keen to land a role in Corrie and even revealed that he’d auditioned last month.
The role will be the northern lad’s first major acting job. Shayne found fame after winning The X Factor back in 2005 but was dropped by Simon Cowell‘s record label Syco in 2011 after his third album struggled in the charts.
He’s since appeared on stage in the hit musical Rock Of Ages and recently released a new album.
Shayne becomes the latest in a string of stars to join Coronation Street after Sarah Harding and Paddy McGuinness both signed up for guest roles this summer.
