Music mogul Simon Cowell as good as confirms Cheryl Cole for US X Factor
The music mogul says American TV bosses have been keen on Cheryl, 27, as a judge from the outset – despite reports they were hesitant to hire her because of her little-known status across the pond and strong Geordie accent.
‘Mike Darnell and Peter Rice will tell you they wanted her all the time,’ reveals Simon, 51.
‘I showed a tape to Mike Darnell 2 years ago of a clip I’d shot in England of Cheryl and he said there and then, “I’d hire her now for [American] Idol.”
‘They absolutely fell in love with her…they were desperate for her.’
Simon had only met Girls Aloud singer Cheryl once himself before he gave her a job on the British X Factor, but he knew straight away that she was perfect for the role.
‘I thought she was bright, cute, knew what she was talking about, ambitious,’ he tells Deadline.com.
‘And you meet someone special a few times in your life…and this girl is special.
‘She’s just got a great ability to communicate. She’s a great judge. She’s smart. It’s just a hunch.
‘If people take to her like the British public did, I think she’s going to do really well in America. And Fox was desperate to hire her.’
So far, Simon has only confirmed himself and producer LA Reid, 54, as judges on the show, but he has said there’s a ‘good chance’ 80s popstar Paula Abdul, 48, will be joining them.
