Retrial of the case has begun
Amanda Knox fled Italy because she’s guilty of Meredith Kercher’s murder, her former boss has claimed in a retrial of the case.
Patrick Lumumba, a bar owner who Amanda falsely accused of killing Meredith in 2007, has spoken out against his former employee as the case against her and former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito is reheard.
‘Amanda is on the run because she is guilty,’ Patrick told the court in Florence on the first day of proceedings.
‘Amanda ran away because I think it has to do with the death of Meredith. [She is] guilty or else she would not have lied.
‘She did not want to be punished and wanted to sidetrack the investigation. The appeals court gave her the chance to escape.
‘But poor Meredith deserves justice.’
Patrick previously sued Amanda, 26, for slander after she initially claimed that he had committed the murder while she hid in the kitchen of the home she shared with fellow exchange student Meredith, 21, in Perugia, Italy.
Amanda and former boyfriend Raffaele were jailed for killing Meredith in 2009 along with Rudy Guede, who remains in prison, but their convictions were overturned in 2011 after a successful appeal.
A retrial was ordered earlier this year on the grounds of ‘contradictions and inconsistencies’ in the defence cases.
Neither Amanda nor Raffaele, 29, were present as the retrial got underway. Both vigorously deny killing Meredith.
