Will.i.am’s protégé speaks to Now about best friend Amy Winehouse
The winner of The Voice will be catapulted into the limelight, with a record deal and all the trappings that fame brings.
And no one knows what that really means better than Will.i.am’s contestant Tyler James, 30.
Not only has the Londoner already had a failed recording career and a stint in rehab, he was also best friends with the late Amy Winehouse after meeting her at the Sylvia Young Theatre School aged 13.
‘When I applied, I was still grieving for Amy. I was in a very low place. But this show’s the best thing that’s happened to me,’ Tyler tells us.
‘The Voice is helping me get through everything and for the first time in ages, I’m feeling happy again.’
Tyler was devastated when Amy passed away last summer.
‘My best friend had died and I was completely lost without her,’ he admits.
‘She was the only person who really understood me.
‘It felt like such a massive injustice.
‘I couldn’t get out of bed and my friends had to remind me to brush my teeth. But now I’ve reached a place in my head where I realise that Amy was too good for this world.’
